Balnarring Preserves (#059)

Balnarring Preserves

We (Matthew & Melissa) are the current custodians of a beautiful 1885 homestead along with garden and undercover orchard on 9 acres in Balnarring. We have over approx. 200 roses, lavender, Australian natives, 12 large raised vegetable beds as well as over 50 fruit trees all cide-free.  Having an abundance of fruit and vegetables is a wonderful thing, as it not only provides nourishment for oneself, but also allows for the opportunity to be able to share with others.

We wanted to be able to capture the freshness and goodness on offer, along with being able to enjoy it all-year-round.  We found for example, when we grew cucumbers we ended up with 100’s of them for 3 months and then nothing for 9 months.  Preserving food used to be an essential skill for households and communities to ensure a steady supply of food throughout the year.  With refrigeration, busy lifestyles and the increased reliance on convenience foods, traditional preserving methods have declined.

Our mothers came and stayed with us on the farm and we asked them to teach us how to make jams, chutney, relish, sauces, etc using preserving methods such as canning, freezing, drying, fermenting and salting.  We learnt from the best!  Now, we want to be able to share our produce and our learnings with others.  Our preserves are seasonal based upon what is growing well on the farm.  We also like to enjoy life and we have some fun with our produce and label names ie: ‘’Settle Down Rose Petal’’ for our Rose Cordial and ‘’Sunshine in a Jar for Melbournians’’, for our Apricot jam.

Some of our produce consists of:

  • Cordials:  Rose Cordial, Lemonade, Pink Grapefruit, Lemon & Lime, Blackberry, Quince
  • Jams: Plum, Apricot, Quince, Marmalade, Fig, Blackberry, Apple & Pear
  • Pickles: Bread and Butter, Zucchini
  • Sauces: Apple, Worcestershire, Blackberry, Quince, Tomato
  • Chutneys & Relish: Plum & Ginger, Beetroot, Tomato,
  • Quince Paste and Jelly

Farmgate Stall at the front gate is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Mushroom Forestry (#050)

Mushroom Forestry

Cultivating delicious, organic gourmet mushrooms on the Mornington Peninsula since 2016.

Mushroom Forestry was launched to grow the highest quality, organic fresh mushrooms for discerning restaurants and customers. Our range includes Oyster, Shiitake, Lions Mane and more. We are a little different to most gourmet mushroom farms as we truly grow seasonally! Our farm has been built within a cool-store with thick, insulated walls. The internal temperature naturally fluctuates throughout the year, ranging from lows of 12 degrees in Winter to 25 degrees in Summer. As the temperature changes through the seasons we bring in and phase out mushroom varieties according to their ideal growing temperatures.

We now supply high end restaurants, local farm gates and retailers across the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and Sydney.

Yarrimbah Farm (#051)

Yarrimbah Farm

Shane and Debbie Stranges passion for growing plants together began in the mid 80’s when they started a pop up nursery to fund a trip around Australia (1987). Shane and Deb cultivated hundreds of small plants; roses, orchids & geranium and sold them at the Frankston market each week for almost a year on the side, Shane was working as a nurseryman and Deb at her family’s local mower shop in Hastings.
Shane grew up on a vineyard in Mildura, and has been connected to the land ever since, memories of taking cuttings and planting them at just five years old with his Aunty and Nan are some of his fondest. His professional career began at Georyl nursery in Tyabb as a nurseryman specialising in flowers.
After the big trip Shane retuned to work at Shoreham valley palms where he was approached by the vineyard manager from Tucks Ridge, knowing Shane had grown up on a vineyard, he asked if he knew how to prune grapes, like second nature to Shane he showed them how to prune and began casually working on the vineyard. After about 6 months Tucks Ridge offered him a full time position to learn the ropes as Vineyard Manager and in 3 years’ time Shane become the Head Viticulturist. Shane and Deb moved onto the vineyard, Deb was working the cellar door at Tucks Ridge, while Shane managed the vineyard dusk ‘til dawn.
In 1988 Red Hill Vigneron Services (RHVS) was developed, Shane in partnership with 2 others started contracting their knowledge and established over 50 renowned vineyards across the Mornington Peninsula. After many years working with “RHVS” Shane went out on his own and started another business concentrating on Viticulture and Property Consultancy, while Deb raised their 4 children (Joel 28, Taylah 26, Korey 24 & Matilda 16).
In 2003 the Strange family purchased the family property on Coolart Road, Bittern, today known as Yarrimbah farm, Aboriginal for “Meeting Place on the Hill”, a 7acre micro market garden where they specialise in growing chemical free Red, Gold, Black & Purple Raspberries, Tayberries, Loganberries, Silvanberries, Blackberries, Dwarf Apples, Peaches, Purple, White & green Asparagus and Garlic.
Shane & Deb’s main focus lies in growing speciality and rare variety plants, chemically free, to supply local farmgates and restaurants fresh from the paddock. All of their produce is picked to perfect ripeness and delivered daily.

Lil’s Yolky Dokey Eggs (#040)

Lil’s Yolky Dokey Eggs. Pasture-raised, real free-range eggs.

In February 2018, our beautiful daughter Lily Grace, was killed in a tragic 4WD accident at the age of 20. In the long grief-stricken days that followed a vision was born out of the deep love that a mother has for her daughter. On Lily’s bucket list was a dream to own her own bush block, raise pasture-fed hens, sell their free-range eggs whilst operating a beauty salon on the side. Within a few weeks of Lily’s death, we secured a lease on a 50-acre property in Somerville and the Yolky Dokey pasture-raised egg dream for Lil was to become a reality.

Lil’s 50-acre Farm has 1450 hens in 6 chicken caravans. The caravans have automated doors enabling the chooks to roam free during the day and close them in safely at night time. Their second line of defense, four alpacas and maremma dogs as livestock guardians to protect the brood. We would like the number of chickens to remain fewer than 100 hens per hectare, as we believe it is the key to both sustainable farming and ensuring that the girls have plenty of space to live a happy and healthy life.

We supply local businesses and have our farm gate open from 9am – 1pm on at Saturdays.
