Main Ridge Dairy (#010)

Main Ridge Dairy is a farmhouse cheese factory and goat dairy located in Main Ridge on the Mornington Peninsula. We are the only large commercial dairy operating on the Peninsula and pride ourselves in producing a milk of the highest quality that is then handmade into a range of farmhouse cheeses.

Careful feed and herd management, gentle handling of the milk and a passion for cheese help us to provide a range of beautiful cheeses right here on our farm.

Our cheesery is located at the front of our beautiful farm and consists of a sales outlet adjacent to the cheese factory, which allows cheese lovers a view into the ‘Manufacturing room’ and a ‘Maturing room’. At the cheesery we offer our visitors, cheese tastings and sales of our cheeses and also some platters that can be enjoyed in or outside, as well as sales of many cheese related products.

The building itself was designed by Architects NoxonGiffen, as both a practical cheese factory and retail outlet, but also to blend with its beautiful surroundings. The ‘Cheesery’ won the award for Outstanding Commercial/Industrial Building at the Architectural and Design Excellence in the South East Awards, 2009.

We always have some kids (four legged and fury!) close by that love a pat through the fence! We love to offer personal tastings of our product to visitors as they watch the goats grazing out of the window and the cheese being made through another, we know we are offering a product that we have nurtured from start to finish, a true paddock to plate experience!

Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm (#012)

In 1964 parents Pietro and Rosa Gallace, their four children; Ralph, John, Catherine and Michael moved to the Mornington Peninsula from Melbourne, and developed a cherry and apple orchard at Main Ridge. It was Pietro’s dream to own a farm.
But – apple and cherry orchards took 5-7 years
to bear fruit. What they do in the meantime to survive?
Strawberries! Strawberries planted in May bore fruit in November. How good was that! What was even better, they all knew how to pick them, as they had completed harvest training at Nick Tedesco’s strawberry farm, right across the road.

Within 10 years they were growing approximately 10 acres and 200,000 plants. In no time berries were being picked, packed and shipped to Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and on odd occasions to Singapore and Hong Kong. By the early 1980s a painful decision was made: the apple orchard would have to go! They needed the land to expand the berry business.
Today, Sunny Ridge grows berries – strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries at their Mornington Peninsula Farm.

Main Ridge Cattle (#011)

Main Ridge Cattle aims to produce the most tender and tasty beef available from the Mornington Peninsula.
A typical animal at sale will be 600kg plus live weight and will have only been fed on mother’s milk and grass. Every effort is made to raise the animals in a stress free environment with minimal exposure to chemicals.

Main Ridge Cattle is strongly committed to two principles of animal management, namely;

  • The direct correlation between a stress free environment and the tenderness of meat
  • Mother’s milk and grass fed animals produce the tastiest meat possible

Accordingly, at Main Ridge Cattle, every effort is made to raise animals in a stress free environment, with minimal exposure to chemicals and to only feed them on mother’s milk and grass.

These animals provide an excellent opportunity to local butchers to be able to provide high quality, locally bred and grown beef cattle.

Peninsula Avocados (#007)

People said it couldn’t be done so far south, but Steve Marshall of Peninsula Avocados has confounded the naysayers. Grown in a region known for its outstanding cool climate wines, avocados benefit from that long, slow ripening period in exactly the same way as grapes do. While avocados from Queensland grow quickly and can be picked after just six months, Mornington Peninsula avocados take a year to slowly ripen, developing a very rich nutty flavour and seductively smooth texture. Steve manages five avocado farms, picking, packing and distributing the fruit, and aims to produce one million fruit annually in the next three to four years for a Melbourne market hungry for top quality avocados.
