Yarrimbah Farm (#051)

Yarrimbah Farm

Shane and Debbie Stranges passion for growing plants together began in the mid 80’s when they started a pop up nursery to fund a trip around Australia (1987). Shane and Deb cultivated hundreds of small plants; roses, orchids & geranium and sold them at the Frankston market each week for almost a year on the side, Shane was working as a nurseryman and Deb at her family’s local mower shop in Hastings.
Shane grew up on a vineyard in Mildura, and has been connected to the land ever since, memories of taking cuttings and planting them at just five years old with his Aunty and Nan are some of his fondest. His professional career began at Georyl nursery in Tyabb as a nurseryman specialising in flowers.
After the big trip Shane retuned to work at Shoreham valley palms where he was approached by the vineyard manager from Tucks Ridge, knowing Shane had grown up on a vineyard, he asked if he knew how to prune grapes, like second nature to Shane he showed them how to prune and began casually working on the vineyard. After about 6 months Tucks Ridge offered him a full time position to learn the ropes as Vineyard Manager and in 3 years’ time Shane become the Head Viticulturist. Shane and Deb moved onto the vineyard, Deb was working the cellar door at Tucks Ridge, while Shane managed the vineyard dusk ‘til dawn.
In 1988 Red Hill Vigneron Services (RHVS) was developed, Shane in partnership with 2 others started contracting their knowledge and established over 50 renowned vineyards across the Mornington Peninsula. After many years working with “RHVS” Shane went out on his own and started another business concentrating on Viticulture and Property Consultancy, while Deb raised their 4 children (Joel 28, Taylah 26, Korey 24 & Matilda 16).
In 2003 the Strange family purchased the family property on Coolart Road, Bittern, today known as Yarrimbah farm, Aboriginal for “Meeting Place on the Hill”, a 7acre micro market garden where they specialise in growing chemical free Red, Gold, Black & Purple Raspberries, Tayberries, Loganberries, Silvanberries, Blackberries, Dwarf Apples, Peaches, Purple, White & green Asparagus and Garlic.
Shane & Deb’s main focus lies in growing speciality and rare variety plants, chemically free, to supply local farmgates and restaurants fresh from the paddock. All of their produce is picked to perfect ripeness and delivered daily.

M Edwards & Sons (#035)

M Edwards & Sons Pty Ltd

Donald, Jean and Brendon Edwards are premier growers & packers of quality certified organic apples. The farm is bordered by virgin eucalyptus trees and is nestled on Melbourne’s doorstep at Red Hill South. They have been growing apples for 5 generations since the first tree was planted by Don’s great grandfather in the late 1880’s. The orchard has grown with the local community until the early 1980’s when alternative farming methods were looked at due to concerns of the potential negative effects of toxic sprays on families in the area. It was not an easy path and there were many failures for every success.

In the mid 1980’s our organic principles had been put into practice and the orchard was certified organic by NASSA in 1987.

The full flavour, high colour of these apples is brought about by a combination of healthy soil and fresh clean water.

The selection of old apple varieties such as Gravenstein, Jonathan, Golden Delicious,Granny Smith along with newer varieties of Royal Gala, Pink Lady, Fuji, Sundowner and the latest variety Jazz.

Other crops grown on the certified organic orchard include Pears, Cherries, Lemons, Limes.

The organic cherries these are available from December to January dependent on the weather.

We also have certified organic juice that is crushed from our own fruit.

The apple juice is a big favorite and we now have the apple and pear as well.

You can obtain our produce directly from Peninsula Fresh in Baxter or if in Melbourne the Queen Victoria Market at Market Organics.

Cherries can be obtained directly from the farm during Cherry Season.

Mock Red Hill (#018)

Mock Red Hill, located in the Hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula, is a well-established Bio-Dynamic apple orchard and processing facility. The family-owned and operated orchards has been producing high quality, Bio-dynamic (enhanced organic) fresh fruit, apple juice, apple ciders and apple cider vinegar for the local region and beyond for many years.

The Mock family has been growing apples since 1895, when they planted their first orchard just outside Melbourne. Mock Red Hill owner Neville Mock is a fourth generation orchardist, who completed an apprenticeship in fruit growing with his father, Walter Charles Mock, back in 1981. By that time the family had already been living on the Peninsula for almost twenty years, with Walter moving the business to the well-known apple growing area of Red Hill in 1960.

These days Neville Mock remains the orchardist and cider maker, but the business has moved with the times. The family became pioneers within the Bio-dynamic movement in Australia when their orchard was first certified in 1974, and Neville had continued to push this factor as a key differentiator for the Mock brand.

Mock Orchard Farm Gate Shop is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm & Sunday 11am to 4pm.

The Farm Gate Store & Cider Lounge run by Marti, is open all year round and invites the public to sample and purchase their products. Their most recent addition is a unique sensory cellar door, set up in the original wooden cool store, built in 1945. After the tasting experience, customers will have to option to take the experience back home, with products available for purchase. Otherwise kick back and relax with a cold cider, complimented by a platter of local cheese, produce and of course Mock Red Hill and Totally Pure Fruits’ very own dried and fresh produce.
